Common Plumbing Myths Debunked

17March 2025

When it comes to plumbing, misinformation is all around the internet. Today, we are debunking some of the most common plumbing myths in order to help keep your plumbing system in top-notch condition.

Myth #1: Grease goes down the drain

One of the most common myths is that you can pour grease down the sink, especially when you pour it along with hot water. However, doing so is never advised by plumbing professionals as grease eventually cools and solidifies further down the pipe, leading to clogs that may be harder to detect and fix. Instead, it is recommended to dispose of small amounts of grease in the green bin, and dispose of large amounts of grease at a recycling depot that accepts grease and oil.

Myth #2: A slow leak isn’t a big deal

Another common myth is that small and slow leakages are not worth paying attention to. This is false as slow leaks may be a sign of deeper plumbing issues that need to be addressed as soon as possible. For example, a small puddle forming under your sink may indicate a loose pipe joint, corroded pipes or other issues that may lead to major pipe failures if unaddressed. Therefore any leak, no matter its size, should be promptly addressed with the help of a professional plumber.

Myth #3: A slow drainage is also not a big deal

A similar misconception is that slow water drainage can be ignored. The reality is that slow drainage often indicates early-stage clogs that may evolve into full blockages if left unaddressed. If you notice slow drainage, you can try flushing the pipe with hot water in order to break down grease or soap buildup. If the issue persists, it is recommended to schedule a professional drain clearage service in order to quickly and safely remove any debris and blockages from your pipes using drain snakes, augers, camera inspections, and other professional tools. This is especially important if you are experiencing slow drainage with multiple pipes in your house, which may indicate a deeper issue with your plumbing system.

Myth #4: Plumbers are only needed for major repairs

Last but not least, some people believe that plumbers are only needed in situations that warrant a major repair. In reality, routine maintenance and inspections help identify plumbing issues early on and prevent them from escalating into major damages, saving you time and money in the long run.

These are just a few of the most common plumbing myths out there.
