Spring Maintenance Checklist

1May 2025

As we bid farewell to cold weather and step into Spring, this is the perfect time to give your plumbing system a little extra attention. Cold temperatures can be tough on your pipes, fixtures, and outdoor plumbing, and catching problems early on can save you money down the road.

This is why we prepared a simple spring plumbing checklist to help you ensure your plumbing system is running smoothly:

1. Inspect Outdoor Faucets and Hoses

Inspect the water flow of outdoor spigots and hoses. If you notice low pressure or leaks, this could be an indication of a freeze-damaged pipe.

2. Clean Your Gutters and Downspouts

It is recommended to clear out leaves and debris in your gutters and downspouts, as clogs or blockages can potentially lead to drainage issues that affect your foundation and basement plumbing.

3. Test Your Sump Pump

If you have a sump pump in your basement, make sure that it is working properly by pouring a bucket of water into the sump pit and checking if the pump turns on and drains properly. If not, you may need to contact a professional plumber for help.

4. Check Toilets for Silent Leaks

To test for toilet leaks, an easy way is to add a few drops of food coloring to your toilet tank—if color shows up in the bowl without flushing, a leak is present. These are often easy and inexpensive to fix.

5. Clear Slow Drains

Check around the house for slow-draining sinks, tubs, or showers. You can use a natural drain cleaner to clear the drain, but if the issue persists it is advised to call a professional for help.
